FAQ about waxing
What is waxing?
Waxing is the process of hair removal from the roots performed with a sticky substance, such as wax, to adhere to body hair, and then removing this covering and pulling out the hair from the follicles.
What is hair removal wax made out of?
The are ingredients that are usually integrated in a good wax formula: beeswax, extracts from tree sap or gum, known as rosin or rosin, water, pine resins, natural oils.
How to perform waxing?
The wax applies to the skin with unwanted hair in the direction of hair growth. Then the cloth strip is placed over the wax and pressed down firmly. To remove, hold skin taut with one hand and use the other hand to quickly pull off the cloth in the direction of hair growth.
How painful is it? Should I apply numbing cream or take a pain reliever?
It all comes down to your personal pain tolerance and how experienced your aesthetician is.
Application of numbing cream makes the procedure even less painful, but, in this case, apply numbing cream an hour before your appointment(numbing creams take a while to set in), It's best to apply one hour before coming to the salon. It also helps to take a pain reliever, for example ibuprofen, 30-45 minutes before waxing.
What length should the hair be for waxing? When should I stop shaving before waxing?
Make sure your hair is at least 1/4-inch long (above the size of grain of rice). If it isn't, you won't be able to get waxed and you'll have to reschedule. If hair is longer(3/4-inch or more), you might consider trimming it shorter, though your aesthetician can also do this.
On average, before waxing, you should not shave for 7-10 days, but much depends on the individual.
How long does waxing last? How often should you do waxing?
After the first appointment, waxing should last anywhere from 3 to 6 weeks, depending on your personal hair growth, the location of your wax, and the accuracy of the application. If you keep regular appointments, you may find that the process becomes less painful and that your hair grows back slower over time.
The optimal time between waxing will be between 4-5 weeks, depending on the body part.
Does waxing get rid of hair permanently?
Waxing isn't a permanent way to remove body hair.
Again, keep in mind, you'll get less hair growth each time, and the hair that does grow will be finer and sparser.
Do not use a razor to remove hairs in between appointments. This defeats the purpose of and decreases the benefits of body waxing.
What should you do before your appointment?
-Make sure your hair is at least 1/4-inch long
-Lightly exfoliate the skin with a buffing mitt or washcloth to get some dead skin cells out of the way a minimum of 2 days before your appointment. Don't exfoliate the day before, the day of or the day after
-Do not moisturize by putting creams or lotions on the area that will be receiving treatment
-Do not apply deodorant if getting underarms waxed
-Avoid tanning or applying retinol creams for at least 24 to 48 hours before your appointment
-The day of, minimize your caffeine and alcohol intake to prevent your pores from tightening
-Prior to the appointment. dress in loose, cotton clothing for maximum comfort
-To minimize pain, take an over-the-counter pain reliever, for example ibuprofen, 30-45 minutes before sugaring
-Take a shower before coming in
What should you do after your appointment?
24 hours after waxing appointment you should avoid the following:
-Do not apply any scented lotions or creams
-Do not exfoliate the skin for 48 hours after treatment
-Deodorant (if you had underarms sugared)
-Heat (including saunas, steam rooms and hot yoga studios); shower is ok though
-Direct sunlight, tanning beds and infrared lamps
-Working out (skip the gym for the day)
-Make-up (if you had face waxed)
-Touching, scratching or rubbing the treated area
It's very important to exfoliate and hydrate your skin. Start exfoliating the skin 3 days after the waxing treatment every 2-3 days: for exfoliation you can use a bristle body brush or harsh shower glove and move in a circular motion. For the sensitive bikini area use a coffee or sugar scrub in order to keep skin hydrated, make sure to moisturize with a lotion or cream that is all natural.
Can you do waxing on your period?
Technically, yes, you can. You can do waxing during your period as long as you wear a tampon. Although, remember your skin is usually more sensitive during that time of the month, so you are likely to experience more pain or discomfort during the procedure.
Can you do waxing when you're pregnant?
It's always best to check with your doctor, but if your doctor is fine with it, you are free to do so.
Are there side effects after waxing?
You may experience temporary redness, irritation and itching right after your waxing session. These side effects are pretty common, but resist the temptation to itch, because this could create skin's tears or scarring.
If your skin is very sensitive, you may also develop:
-temporary bumps(you can apply a calming cream or balm to help soothe these bumps, but they'll go away within a few hours on their own)
-rashes(this can last for a day or longer; if your rush is severe , or if it spreads, discontinue using product immediately)
-allergic reaction(don't use wax anymore if you notice hives, itchiness, or a red rash)
-pore bleeding or "pinpoint bleeding"(this is completely normal; it's actually a sign that the hair was removed successfully from the root)
-infection(it happens in an area where bleeding or skin damage occurred. See your doctor if you experience swelling or oozing at the waxing site)

FAQ about sugaring
What is sugaring?
Sugaring is one of the superior hair removal methods performed with a sugar paste.
What is sugar paste?
The sugar paste is made of all-natural ingredients: glucose or sugar, lemon juice and water - is safe and uses no chemical additives.
Because of all of the above, sugaring is particularly suitable for people with allergies and sensitive skin.
Why sugaring better than waxing?
-With the sugaring technique - the sugar paste is applied against the direction of the hair growth and pulled off with it - the hair removes from the root, making it especially effective for ingrown or curly hair.
-When you remove the root, the follicle will have less blood supply to it over time, which will in turn weaken it, so you'll get less hair growth each time, and the hair that does grow will be finer and sparser.
-Also, sugar paste doesn't stick to the top layer of the skin, so it doesn't pull at live skin cells(unlike waxing, which sticks very well and, during the procedure, could remove the top layer of live skin and cause the hair to break at the surface). Because of all of the above, the skin reacts with less irritation, less pain, definitely less hair breaks, less hair growth, less ingrown hair.
How painful is it? Should I apply numbing cream or take a pain reliever?
It all comes down to your personal pain tolerance and how experienced your aesthetician is. In general, sugaring is less painful than waxing because the sugar paste doesn't stick to the skin.
Application of numbing cream makes the procedure even less painful, but, in this case, apply numbing cream an hour before your appointment(numbing creams take a while to set in), It's best to apply one hour before coming to the salon. It also helps to take a pain reliever, for example ibuprofen, 30-45 minutes before sugaring.
What length should the hair be for sugaring? When should I stop shaving before sugaring?
Make sure your hair is at least 1/4-inch long (above the size of grain of rice). If it isn't, you won't be able to get sugared and you'll have to reschedule. If hair is longer(3/4-inch or more), you might consider trimming it shorter, though your aesthetician can also do this.
On average, before sugaring, you should not shave for 7-10 days, but much depends on the individual.
How long does sugaring last? How often should you sugaring?
After the first appointment, sugaring will last around 3 weeks. If you keep regular appointments, you may find that the process becomes less painful and that your hair grows back slower over time.
The optimal time between sugaring will be between 3-4 weeks, depending on the body part.

Laser Hair Removal(LHR) is one of the most popular cosmetic
procedures. It uses highly concentrated light to penetrate hair follicles and inhibit future hair growth.
Currently LHR is the most popular and effective method which provides minimal discomfort and less downtime for permanent hair reduction.
How does LHR work for hair removal?Simply put, LHR uses light energy which is converted into heat or thermal energy which causes thermal injury of stem cells (permanent hair loss) or thermal destruction of hair bulb (stops hair growth).
How many treatments might I need and how fast will I see results? The amount of treatments depends on the area being treated. On average, 6 treatments are carried out, usually once every 6 weeks - this means that a full treatment cycle can take up to nine month. People with coarse hair need 2 to 5 extra treatments. Every treatment you will see 20% of hair reduction.
Is LHR really permanent?
In short, no. Although the procedure is often advertised as a form of "permanent" hair removal, laser treatment only reduced the number of unwanted hairs in a performed area.
Good news: depending on the area to be treated, hair colour, coarseness and density of the hair, some people may even go years without seeing any regrowth. If you do, it definitely tends to be finer and lighter in colour and density than before.
Advice: after the initial treatment, LHR should be permanent if you have a yearly touch-up session.
What are the side effects? Is laser hair removal painful? Is LHR cancerous? One of the benefits of LHR is that it is a non-invasive method of treatment, so it involves no downtime and, as a result, the side effects are minimal. Usually, there may be a little redness and swelling which can be treated by simply applying ice. However, depending on the sensitivity of your skin, mild blistering or bruising of the treated areas lasting from several hours to 3-14 days could happen. Generally speaking, LHR is not painful because of the Integrated Cooling System for patient comfort. Sometimes you could feel a mild tingling sensation which is treated simply by using a soothing cream or lotion.
The lasers used for LHR are specifically designed to pass through the skin cells and target only the hair follicles. Small amount of radiation used in lasers isn't harmful, and there is no evidence that LHR procedure causes skin cancer.
How to prepare the skin for laser hair removal?Do NOT tan or use self-tans or solariums during four weeks. Do NOT use skin resurfacing products (RetinA, Glycolic Peels) during 14 days prior to treatment. Refrain from plucking or waxing for at least 2-4 weeks prior to laser hair removal. Remove perfumes & makeup before treatment. Shave the area that will be treated prior to 24 hours to your appointment. Do NOT bleach your hair.
Precautions for the first days after LHR:After laser hair removal is important to avoid the excessive heat for 24 hours (saunas, hot shower or baths), the sun and excessive exercise for several days (especially for the first 48 hours); keep the area clean and wear SPF of 30 full spectrum; do NOT apply perfume, creams, lotions or makeup for 24 hours (natural mineral cosmetics can be used). Also, avoid any aggressive skin care products such as scrubs, exfoliants etc.
Who is a good and not a good candidate for laser hair removal?People with white, untanned skin and dark hair are the best candidates. This allows the laser to focus its light on the pigment within the hair and does not have pigment within the skin competing for. People with naturally dark skin type or deeply tanned skin sometimes experience complications, so they should discuss such issues with an experienced skin care specialist. However, there are specific lasers that can be used successfully. Those one that have blonde or white hair, unfortunately, are not good candidates for this treatment, as they lack the pigment necessary for treatment.
Who should NOT have laser hair removal?Pregnant women should avoid LHR treatment until after they give birth; breast feeding; people, who have sensitivity or allergy to light; people who take contraindicated medications (steroids, hormone replacement therapy) or have contraindicated diseases (lupus, cancer, diabetes); people who have a tendency to form keloids scars or develop increased or decreased skin pigmentation when healing. Also, people who are taking Accutane should avoid IPL laser hair removal until at least six month after they stop using the medication. It's also vital to not have any skin rashes, infections, or open wounds on the treated area.
What kind of LHR technology do you use?At Vancouver Green Spa we use diode laser hair removal machine
How can I learn more about LHR?To learn more about this innovative treatment and how it can benefit you, we suggest you make an appointment to visit our salon. Phase 2. Lifting phase: directs a pulsating light to the skin surface. Light passes through the layers of the skin stimulating repair mechanisms and the production of collagen.
Phase 3. Non-surgical facelift and product infusion phase: infusion of antioxidants and vitamin complexes to further control the aging process.
Microdermabrasion Treatment
Microdermabrasion is one of the best preventative and corrective treatments for skin imperfections like fine wrinkle lines, blemishes, acne scars. The DermaPod Turbo Flow System generates a circular, vortex-like motion, flow of crystals onto the surface to buff away the surface layer of skin. It has the ability to trigger the skin’s own repair mechanism allowing the dermis to form new collagen and elastin fibers making the skin thicker.
Benefits of microdermabrasion:
- Younger-looking skin
- Reduction in fine lines and wrinkles
- Tightening facial contour
- Increase skin elasticity
- Improved textural irregularities (pigmentation, enlarged pores, mild scars)
Glycolic, Lactic or Enzymatic Peels**
Glycolic, Lactic or Enzymatic Peels is an excellent treatment to diminish the ravaging effects of time and to enhance the skin’s overall appearance. This facial is designed to loosen dead cells from the skin, giving you a fresh healthy glow. The procedure treats sun damage and other pigmentation problems and minimizes fine lines and wrinkles. It also stimulates the production of new collagen and elastin, which improves skin texture.
Microcurrent Facial* (no needle mesotherapy)
Micro-current Treatment is an extremely low level of electricity that mirrors the body’s own natural electrical impulses. Through electrical stimulation, microcurrent works by mimicking the way that the brain relays messages to the muscles. It is reported to aid in the healing and repairing of tissue and to influence cellular activity. The goal is to speed up the body’s natural regenerative processes, using the proper amount of low-level current. Microcurrent requires a manual manipulation to reeducate the muscles, but it does not cause a visible or physical contraction of the face via the electrical current.
Micro-current can be effective in the following ways:
- Improves blood and lymph circulation
- Increases muscle tone
- Restores elasticity
- Reduces redness and inflammation
- Minimizes post-surgical healing time
- Increases collagen and elastin production
When used in treatments for aging skin, the result is a firmer appearance of the skin.

Enzymatic peels offer a more gentle solution that can be incorporated into a regular skincare regimen. The composition of the enzymes (pepsin, pancreatin, papain) specifically decompose keratinized protein by lytic procedure, or by rupture. Since healthy cells are deeper and do not contain keratinized cells, they are not affected by this enzymes: the enzymes decompose dead cells by saving healthy ones

What is Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)?
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a newest, latest laser technology used to provide a variety of aesthetic and therapeutic treatments. IPL uses a high intensity light source which emits polychromatic light. Because this flash lamp works with non-coherent light in a broad wavelength spectrum of 400-1400nm., it allows in selecting individual treatment parameters & adapting to different indications and skin types. Also, IPL utilizes filters which have the ability to regulate the light spectrum to better target various skin problems with minimal discomfort and less downtime.
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment, also known as photofacial, is one of the safest skin care treatments and extremely effective on moderate inflammatory acne. IPL is very efficient at targeting the pigmented cells left behind after active acne lesions disappear. Also, IPL uses a targeted wavelength on active acne lesions that helps to kill the acne bacteria and treat active acne breakouts.
How does IPL work for acne treatment?
Without drugs, pain and, most importantly, without downtime the IPL Acne Therapy destroys the most common bacteria that cause acne and decreases colonization of glands by bacteria. Simply put, IPL uses light energy, which is converted into heat or thermal energy, causing damage to the sebaceous glands and blasting the bacteria out.
How many treatments might I need and how fast will I see results?
The amount of treatments needed would, of course, depend on the severity of the acne condition being treated. On average, 6 to 10 treatments are carried out, usually once every week to 10 days apart. Maintenance treatment recommended every 6-12 months. The average treatment session takes approximately 30 minutes. Again, how fast you will see results will depend on the condition. However, some change is often present after only 1 session with more dramatic results occurring with additional treatments.
After the acne is gone, the best and only thing for scarring is Microdermabrasion! You will need 6 to 8 treatments, and space them out a week or 10 days apart. The skin growth cycle is every 2 weeks for the face, so essentially you’ll develop a new layer of skin in that time.
What should you expect after a properly done treatment?
Because bacteria is purging you will get worse before you get better. The bacteria you see coming up was always there. However, the IPL chased it out of the sebaceous gland and brought it all out at the same time.
What are the side effects? Is IPL acne treatment painful?
One of the benefits of IPL is that it is a non-invasive method of treatment, so it involves no downtime and, as a result, the side effects are minimal. Usually, there may be a little redness and swelling which can be treated by simply applying ice. However, depending on the sensitivity of your skin, mild blistering or bruising of the treated areas lasting from several hours to 3-14 days could happen. Generally speaking, IPL is not painful because of the Integrated Cooling (PCC) System for patient comfort. Sometimes you could feel like an elastic band snapping against the skin or mild tingling sensation which is treated simply by using a soothing cream.
How to prepare the skin for IPL acne therapy?
Do NOT tan or use self-tans or solariums during four weeks. Do NOT use skin resurfacing products (Retin A, Glycolic Peels) during 14 days prior to treatment. Remove perfumes & makeup before treatment. Even most people have no downtime after IPL, try not to plan any major events for 2 to 3 days after your fist IPL acne treatment.
Precautions for the first days after your IPL acne therapy
After IPL acne treatment is important to avoid the excessive heat for 12 hours (saunas, hot shower), the sun for several days (especially for the next 48 hours to minimize the risk of getting increased pigmentation in the skin), keep the area moist and wear SPF of 30 full spectrum (provides optimal protection if doing rejuvenation procedures). Also, avoid any aggressive skin care products such as scrubs, exfoliants, alpha or beta hydroxy acid products. Do NOT squeeze pimples! Go to the drugstore and find a clay mask (used every second day) and cleanser or cream with salicylic acid and/or benzoyl peroxide.
Who is a good and not a good candidate for IPL acne therapy?
IPL designs for all skin types (Fitzpatrick I-VI ). However, people with white, untanned skin are the best candidates. People with naturally dark skin type or deeply tanned skin sometimes experience complications, so they should discuss such issues with an experienced skin care specialist.
Who should NOT have IPL acne treatment?
Pregnant women; breast feeding; people, who have sensitivity or allergy to light; people who take contraindicated medications (steroids, hormone replacement therapy) or have contraindicated diseases (lupus, cancer, diabetes); people who have a tendency to form keloids scars or develop increased or decreased skin pigmentation when healing. Also, people who are taking Accutane should avoid IPL acne treatment until at least six month after they stop using the medication.

What is Light Emitting Diode (LED) Treatment?
Light emitting diode (LED) is a skincare treatment that uses varying wavelengths of light (880nm, 640nm and 465nm) to provide a variety of aesthetic and therapeutic treatments.
How many treatments might I need to see results?
Each treatment lasts about 20-30 minutes. For acne problems or full-face wrinkles the treatment consists of 12 treatment sessions spread over 4 weeks, allowing 3 treatments per week. Even after you’ve achieved the recommended number of sessions, your results aren’t permanent since your skin cells turn over; you may lose some collagen and start to see signs of aging again. You may also experience acne breakouts again. This is why it’s recommended that clients come back for maintenance treatments every few months.
How to prepare the skin for LED treatment?
The LED device should be used as close as possible to the skin which should be free if clothing, make-up ( many make-up formulas contain minerals that may deflect the light) or anything else which may deflect the light away from the skin. Don’t look directly at the light, and wear the goggles provided or use appropriate eye protection.
Who should NOT have LED facial treatment?
How does LED work?
LED light delivers heat in the IR spectrum to provide topical heating for the purpose of elevating tissue temperature; promoting the relaxation of muscle tissue; relieving stiffness; temporarily increasing local blood circulation.
The blue spectrum is intended to reduce acne vulgaris. Blue LED light therapy targets the sebaceous (oil) glands and makes them less active. Also, blue light kills acne-causing bacteria beneath the skin, which can help treat severe acne pimples, including cysts and nodules.
When the red LED light is applied to your skin, the epidermis (outer layer of skin) absorbs it and then stimulates collagen proteins. Your skin will look smoother and fuller, which can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Red LED light also reduces inflammation while improving circulation, which can give you a healthier glow.
What are the side effects?
Side effects from LED light therapy are rare. Clients could experience the following post-treatment symptoms: redness, rash, pain, tenderness, increased inflammation, hives.
See your doctor if you experience any of the symptoms.
Who is a good candidate for LED treatment?
LED designs for all skin types (Fitzpatrick I-VI). Unlike other types of light therapy LEDs don’t contain UV light. Therefore, LED treatment is safe for regular use. LED light therapy doesn’t cause burns compared to other anti-aging treatments such as chemical peels, dermabrasion, and laser therapy.
What kind of LED technology do you use?
At Vancouver Green Spa we use Celluma by Biophotas Inc. is FDA cleared and approved by Health Canada.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) – Capturing the Energy of Light!
Light has been a source of power for as long as the Earth has existed. In fact, we couldn’t live without the energy of light. In recent years, light has come to be seen as unhealthy or even dangerous. It is true that some types of light can be destructive, such as prolonged exposure to UV rays from the sun. However, when manipulated and controlled, light can actually be healing.
What is Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)?
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a newest, latest laser technology used to provide a variety of aesthetic and therapeutic treatments. IPL uses a high intensity light source which emits polychromatic light. Because this flashlamp works with non-coherent light in a broad wavelength spectrum of 400-1400nm., it allows in selecting individual treatment parameters & adapting to different indications and skin types. Also, IPL utilizes filters which have the ability to regulate the light spectrum to better target various skin problems with minimal discomfort and less downtime.
Currently IPL is used to treat various conditions and the range of applications are likely to expand in the years to come. Initially developed as a hair removal tool, IPL is now used to treat brown or age spots, facial spider veins, rosacea, abnormal skin pigmentation, acne, red, blotchy skin, fine wrinkles (by stimulating collagen synthesis), lax skin, pigmented scars (pox or mild acne scars), scaly patches, and more. Also, IPL helps to improve uneven skin texture or tighten pores.
How does IPL work?
Simply put, IPL uses light energy which is converted into heat or thermal energy. This thermal energy is directed to specific targets on top of, or inside the skin. IPL can use broad targets, to stimulate blood circulation and create collagen, or can precisely target chromophores, regions of the skin of varying colours. This versatility is why IPL is so effective.
How many treatments might I need and how fast will I see results?
The duration and amount of treatments needed would, of course, depend on the type and severity of the condition being treated. On average, 4 to 6 treatments are carried out, usually once every 2 to 4 weeks. Maintenance treatment recommended every 3-12 months. The average treatment session takes approximately 30 to 60 minutes. Again, how fast you will see results will depend on the condition.
